District Level Inter School Junior Olympic Games conclude in North District

Mangan, 12th March (IPR): The closing ceremony of the 1st District level Inter-School Junior Olympic Games under Sports for Peace and Development, Khelo India 2020-21 was held in Mangan Senior Secondary School playground Mangan, today. The event was organized by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department (North). The chief guest for the event was the Hon’ble Minister for Road and Bridges and Culture Department Shri Samdup Lepcha. He was accompanied by the Additional Political Secretary to HCM (North). Shri Tshering Wangyal Bhutia, DC (North) Shri Tenzing T Kaleon, SP (North) Smt. Ongmu Bhutia, ADM (North) Shri Sonam Lepcha, SDPO (North) Shri Tseten P Bhutia, Principal Mangan Senior Secondary School, Officers from various line departments and School staff.
The Hon’ble Minister said that the main objective of Khelo India is to stay fit and healthy and asked everybody to follow the same. He stated that India has the advantage of having a huge population, which creates a potential for the country to produce world-class athletes. Keeping this in mind, the Hon’ble PM of India Shri Narendra Modi and his Cabinet Ministers created the idea of Khelo India. This will not only help recognize talents all over the country but also help in scouting promising young talents and give them a platform to excel in their respective fields. He urged the students to participate actively, which will help them stay healthy physically, mentally and will bring about discipline in their lives. He also stated that engaging in sporting activities would help young people stay away from social evils like substance abuse, alcohol and smoking, which in turn would bring about a healthy lifestyle.
Deputy Director (Sports & Youth Affairs, North) informed that the 1st District level Inter School Junior Olympic Games started from GPU level, which then moved to the Block level and was concluded at the District level. The games were played under 14 and 17 categories for both boys and girls. One of the objectives of organizing the games is to uplift the athletes at the grass-root level and to develop personality and stay healthy.
The event also had karate demonstrations, cultural dances, Zumba dance and a song by the students of Mangan Senior Secondary School.
The football final was played between Mangan Block and Dzongu Block, wherein Mangan Block won the match and was declared the Team Champion of the District.
The event concluded with the distribution of medals, certificates and cash prizes to the winners.
