“Aatma Nirbhar Sikkim” a joint initiative of District Administration, Namchi and Nehru Yuva Kendra, Namchi was launched today at all block headquarters of South Sikkim. After the successful implementation of the pilot program in November 2020 in which three schools from Namchi participated, today the program was launched at the district level in which at least one school has participated from each of the eight blocks of South district. In total, nine schools from all across the district have participated in this three-day inter-school competition from 15th January to 17th January. The program aims to inculcate entrepreneurial skills among the students to make them self-reliant and capable of creating jobs which is the main theme of government flagship program “Aatma Nirbar Bharat”.
Each team consists of ten students from class XI and XII and two nodal teachers to assist the students during the event. The initial investment required to set up the food stall is completely borne by the students with each student contributing Rs 500 from their own pocket and thus each team having initial capital of Rs.5000. These schools would then operate the food stalls for three days to generate revenues so as to learn the concept of running a business. At the end of the three days, the team with the maximum profit would be declared as the winner.
All the teams have been instructed to maintain proper account books, revenue & expenditure statements and purchase receipts so that they learn the basics of accounting also in the process. These statements and receipts would also be used by the jury to verify the profit calculation of each team and reconfirm it with the actual cash balance submitted at the end of three days.
Teams have been guided on all the safety protocols to be followed during the event. In addition to this, teams have also been instructed to maintain proper hygiene and follow all the COVID-19 protocols so as to inculcate a sense of cleanliness and hygiene among them.
