Gangtok, November 26 (IPR): The Horticulture Department, Government of Sikkim announced the result of an online essay competition organised for the students of secondary, senior secondary and college level this evening. The essay competition was held through online mode on 30th September amongst three categories.
Hon’ble Minister, Agriculture and Horticulture Departments Shri Lok Nath Sharma, addressing the media at his chamber at Tashiling Secretariat, announced the names of the winner of the online essay competition. He also highlighted objectives and motives to engage the students in creative assignments through online mode. The Minister mentioned that the event was organized under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang on the various subjects like agriculture, horticulture and allied sectors including Sikkim towards a green economy, post harvest management, opportunities and challenges in the horticulture sector, sustainable agriculture, use of technology in agriculture and horticulture sectors, COVID-19 and it impacts on economy and agriculture. The department came to know invaluable views and ideas of young generations towards agriculture and horticulture sectors through the competition, he added. The Minister also underlined the significance of the agricultural sector and the dependence of human society on the farming profession to ensure healthy and fulfilled life even during the time of crisis.
The Minister informed that Rupna Khawas from Deorali Girls Sr. Secondary School secured the first position while Ashika Limboo from Government Sr. Secondary School Rangpo and Kritika Sharma from Government Secondary School Langang obtained a second and third position at Secondary level.
Similarly, in the category of Senior Secondary level, Shri Florencia Pradhan from Government Senior Secondary School Sadam occupied the first position while Tshering Lazom Bhutia from West Point Senior Secondary School and Laksha Shree Pradhan from Tashi Namgyal Academy secured second and third position, respectively.
The student of Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College Tadong Sangay Rinchung Lepcha topped the essay competition in the college level competition while Nidhi Pradhan from Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing and Adarsh Rai from Central Agriculture University stood second and third position, respectively.
The winners of first, second and third positions in the category of the secondary level will be presented with a cash award of Rupees twenty thousand, fifteen thousand and eight thousand, respectively.
Similarly, the winners of first, second and third position at Senior Secondary level category will receive a cash award of Rupees thirty thousand, twenty thousand and ten thousand, while the winning students of college level category will also be presented a cash award of Rupees fifty thousand, thirty thousand and twenty thousand.
Besides, the top three winners in each category, the Department of Horticulture will also provide a consolation cash prize of Rupees two thousand each to five best performing participants in three categories as well.
The Minister also added that the assessment and evaluation of the essay were done by the experts nominated by the Education Department. The State government will introduce subjects of agriculture and allied sectors in the academic syllabus from Class VI onwards, he added. The Minister in his concluding remarks also appealed to the people to adopt agriculture and horticulture with new energy and spirit to enhance productivity at a large scale.
Earlier, Secretary Horticulture Shri M.T.Sherpa briefed on the objectives of the essay competition. He mentioned that the Schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the department came out with an initiative to engage the students on productive assignments. The prize money along with certificates will be awarded to the winners and participants in a program being organized shortly.
