Gangtok, November 26 (IPR): The 13th e-Convocation of the ICFAI University was held at the conference hall of a local hotel here at the state capital Gangtok, today.
The convocation was attended by the Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu via video conference from New Delhi and joined by the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad as the Guest of Honour, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri Prem Singh Tamang, as the Special Guest of Honour, Hon’ble Minister for Education Shri K.N Lepcha, Chief Secretary of Sikkim Shri S.C. Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary Education Department Shri G.P. Upadhayay, Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI University, Sikkim Dr. Jaganath Patnaik. The Convocation ceremony was also attended by the Chancellor of ICFAI University, Sikkim Dr. R.P. Kaushik, Founder, Art of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and MP Lok Sabha and founder -KISS and KIIT Dr. Achyuta Samanta, via video conference as well.
On the occasion, graduating students were awarded Bachelors and Masters Degrees in various disciplines with exceptional performers being awarded Gold and Silver medals. In his address, the Hon’ble Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu extended his greetings to all present at the convocation both physically and virtually. He stated that virtual convocations have become the new trend and commended the ICFAI faculty for organizing this e-Convocation successfully despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Vice President went on to congratulate the students, the professors and the parents for the day, a grand culmination of the efforts, sacrifices and dedication put in by all. He especially congratulated the students for achieving the feat of the university degree which is still a privilege to many and asserted that they now have a bigger responsibility towards serving the nation, the society, their families and themselves. The Vice President also spoke about the New Education Policy that has been envisioned by the Government at the centre and asserted that the value based education system being promoted by the New Education Policy (NEP) is the need of the hour and this system will go a long way in building resilience in the learners to face any adversity in life. He asked the educators to take inspiration from the holistic vedic education and understand the vision of the NEP. Highlighting that values had always been emphasised in our ancient systems, the Vice President stated that our vedas and upanishads mandate our duties towards self, family, society and nature. He emphasised that we were taught to live in harmony with nature. The Vice President stressed the importance of learning from nature and asked the students to follow the values enshrined in our ancient culture. He concluded his address with a message for the students to move forward with honesty, sincerity and confidence.
The Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad in his address extended his hearty congratulations to the students for completing an important phase of their lives and expressed his well wishes on entering the next one. He encouraged the students to face every challenge with courage and knowledge to successfully overcome all adversities. The Governor lauded the students for sailing admirably through their academic journey due to their hard work and perseverance and exhorted them to move forward with the same spirit and determination. He mentioned that the students are now equipped to serve the nation to the best of their abilities and called on them to strive for excellence in everything they seek.
In his address, the Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang expressed his pleasure in being in the midst of an august gathering. At the outset, he congratulated the students graduating today and said that this is a momentous day as all their academic efforts over the years have come to fruition. He said that this day marks a milestone in the lives of the students as they are entering into a new stage. He expressed that with the knowledge and value education gained over the years at the institution, the students will be equipped to ably handle the challenges thrown at them.
The Chief Minister acknowledged many sacrifices made by the students, the teachers and the mentors in the academic journey and said that it is a proud day for all. In conclusion, he said that the students are the country’s next generation of managers and leaders and wished them growth towards effective leadership wherever life takes them. He urged them to strive towards peace and prosperity and ensure harmony in society.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI University Dr. Jaganath Patnaik delivered the welcome address where he welcomed the Vice President of India, the Hon’ble Governor, the Hon’ble Chief Minister and other dignitaries and distinguished guests. He thanked all for being a part of the Convocation ceremony which is a day of significance for all those associated with the institution. In his address, the VC also briefed the gathering about various initiatives taken by the University in assisting the unemployed youths of Sikkim and also promising collaborations with other universities. He stated that even during the pandemic the University has grown stronger and managed to stay connected and up to date by organising webinars. He congratulated all the students for achieving a commendable feat in their academic life and wished them success for the future.
The Convocation ceremony saw the Conferment of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) to Dr.Achyuta Samanta-MP/Lok Sabha and Founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, and to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Gurudevji- Founder of Art of Living Foundation.
Later, the Registrar of ICFAI University R. Chettri delivered the vote of thanks.
