Mangan, 02 August (IPR): The HPV vaccination campaign was launched today at North district by District Collector North, Shri Karma R Bonpo. The campaign was kicked off from Mangan Senior Secondary School and was simultaneously carried out in several schools across the North district.
The launch campaign at Mangan SSS was also attended by Joint Director, HRDD, State HPV Nodal Officer, Dr. Phumsay Denzongpa , DRCHO, President, Mangan Nagar Panchayat, teachers , parents and guardians of the children.
Dr. Phumsay Denzongpa sensitized the participants about the benefits of the vaccine. She informed that it is not a new vaccine as 270 million doses of HPV vaccine has already been administered worldwide with no major side effects and it has been recommended by WHO and UNICEF.
She informed that many nations have made HPV vaccination a part of the routine vaccination schedule. The vaccine will be administered in two doses in a gap of six months. The second dose will be administered in the month of February next year and also simultaneously cover the girl child who have attained the age of nine years, she stated.
The DC during his address said that the HPV Vaccination is a path breaking initiative of the State Government and will lay the foundation for a strong and healthy Sikkim. He informed that the vaccine is available is private sectors at a price of approx. Rs 6000/. However, in Sikkim it is being provided free of cost. He urged the health workers, teachers and parents and other stakeholders to make the campaign a success.
Around 310 girl child in the age group of 09-14 years were administered with the HPV vaccine today in the North district. The phase I of the HPV vaccination campaign will continue till 14 August 2018.
