A public tribute to the Brave Martyrs of the Indian army on the evening of 25th June 2020 at M.G. Marg, Gangtok

Gangtok, June 23: (IPR) The State Government is organizing a solemn function called ‘Veeron Ko Naman or Salute to the Braveheart’ on the evening of 25th of June at M.G. Marg, Gangtok, to pay a public tribute to the Brave Martyrs of the Indian army who lost their lives in the recent clash at the India-China Border along Ladakh.

A meeting to finalize the preparations for the programme was held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Shri S.C. Gupta at Tashiling Secretariat today. The Meeting had the presence of Political Secretary to HCM Shri Jacob Khaling, DGP Shri A. Shankar Rao, Heads of various Departments, officials from the NIC, Army and the Rajya Sainik Board.

The Chief Secretary briefed that the programme will be graced by Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad and Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang. The programme will also have the participation of Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, and other dignitaries, along with members of the Civil Society, Social Organizations, Media Organizations and the citizenry.

The Chief Secretary informed that the Union Home Minister, Union Defence Minister and Union Minister of State for DoNER will address the function in real time through a live webcast.

After the wreath laying ceremony, the Sikkim Police will present the ‘Shok Shastra Shraddhanjali’, a special drill as a mark of respect and tribute to the Martyrs, followed by two minutes of silence.

The programme will also have patriotic songs presented by artists from the Culture Department.

The programme will culminate with the lighting of candles or mobile flashlights by the dignitaries and members of the public to pay homage to the martyrs.

During the meeting, the responsibility of each of the Departments was discussed in detail and specific roles were assigned to ensure the success of the programme.

After the meeting, the Chief Secretary briefed the media about the programme. He informed that the purpose of organizing the programme is to reinforce the message to the nation and the world that Sikkim and its people stand with our brave soldiers/martyrs who have made the supreme sacrifice for the country. He also said that the youth of Sikkim have come forward each year to join the Indian Army, which in itself testifies the feeling of patriotism and service of the people of Sikkim.

The Chief Secretary said that the programme will be organized duly considering all the safety protocols and social distancing norms.

Political Secretary to HCM, Shri Jacob Khaling, in his brief address, highlighted the significance of the programme. He said that the programme is being organized with the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister with the involvement of all the line departments of the Government. He said that the programme is a symbolic gesture to showcase the solidarity of the people of Sikkim towards the nation. He appealed to the people of Sikkim, the civil society, and social organizations to come forward and participate in the programme.

Later, the Chief Secretary, Political Secretary to HCM, DGP and officers of the line departments visited the venue at MG Marg to oversee the preparations.
