Namchi, 4th June, 2020: To accommodate the returnees of South Sikkim and to undergo the mandatory 14 days period of Institutional Quarantine so as to curb the spread of COVID-19. The South District Administration has transformed two important Government campus namely State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) under Rural Development Department and State Institute of Capacity Building (SICB) under Skill Development Department both located in Karfectar, Jorethang, South Sikkim into Free Institutional Quarantine Centres for South District.
This quarantine facility started from 24th March, 2020 and has the capacity to accommodate 33 people in a total of 15 rooms. This centre provides a separate room with a balcony, 13 rooms are double bedded and 3 rooms are triple bedded with attached bathrooms. Currently, a total of 22 inmates comprising of 12 male and 10 female under the category of senior citizens and medical patients are undergoing their mandatory institutional quarantine at the centre. The facility has SDM, (Jorethang) Mr. R.B Bhandari as Nodal Officer and Joint Director Mrs. Chandra Kala Rai as Incharge. They are assisted by the medical team, IRBns accompanied by various other staff of the institute. The centre has also set up a Swab Collection Chamber and till date, a total number of 58 people has been discharged after testing negative.
Similarly, this Government Institute converted into Quarantine Centre was operational from 5th May, 2020 onwards. The centre has lodging which can accommodate atleast 92 returnees. Presently, this centre has a total of 42 returnees who are medical patients, parents with their child and are undergoing their compulsory quarantine period. The centre is headed by SDM (Jorethang) Mr. R.B Bhandari as the Nodal Officer and Central Administrator SICB Mr. Bishal Rai as Incharge. This centre also includes Medical Staff, IRBns, volunteers and other support staff. A total of 88 people has been discharged from the centre after the test results were negatives.
The campus of SIRD and SICB is known for imparting various training and programmes focusing on skill and rural developments. But now they are functioning as facility quarantine centres.
The management teams in this Centre are putting in their earnest efforts to offer better services by providing basic amenities like televisions, toiletries, thermal scanner, blood pressure equipment, baby food and many more. Additionally, SICB quarantine centre is also offering gift hampers to children and frontline warriors in order to uplift their spirit and try to work in a positive environment. These centres are also duly maintaining protocols laid down by the Sikkim State Government for the functioning of a quarantine facility.
