Gangtok, 27th March: Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad today participated in a special video conferencing session presided over by Hon’ble President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan and conducted by Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu from Vice President’s Secretariat. The conference was for the review and the state of preparedness in all the States and Union Territories following the nationwide lockdown in the wake of the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the country and was participated by Hon’ble Governors and Lt. Governors of all States and Union Territories.
The deliberations started with the opening remarks of the Hon’ble President wherein he underlined the need for strict enforcement of lockdown and social distancing norms in order to contain the spread of COVID-19. He further reiterated the commitment of Union and State governments to protect the interest of the weaker and vulnerable section of society whose lives have been worst hit by the nationwide lockdown. He further urged all the Governors, Lt. Governors and Administrators of the State and Union Territories to ensure that the welfare and initiatives of the government reach the intended section of population without compromising on the objectives of Nationwide lockdown and social distancing norms. He asked the Governors, Lt. Governors and Administrators of the State and Union Territories, as the first citizen of the States and Union Territories, to guide the people and motivate the front line warriors in the collective battle in coordination with the State Governments.
Hon’ble Vice President in his comments stressed on the need to utilise the service of charitable NGOs, Red Cross Society and other voluntary organisations in the efforts of the government to cater to the specific needs of the section of the population who are more vulnerable. He stressed on the need to oversee that supply of essential commodities remain uninterrupted in the respective states and utilise the reach of various religious heads, institutions, universities etc in keeping people aware and at the time of distress through various media sources to keep the morale of the general population high to fight this global menace with more vigour and resilience.
Hon’ble Governors and administrators of the States, worst hit by the COVID-19 spread namely Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Haryana, Delhi, Gujrat, Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Chandigarh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar made a submission on the updates and the state of preparedness in their respective states. Hon’ble Governors also shared good practices being followed in their states during the deliberation.
The conference ended with the collective resolve to make the efforts of the government successful in containing the spread and emerge victorious with the support of the people of India.
