Gandhinagar: The Thirteenth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals was held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat,India between 15th to 22nd February 2020.
The CMS COP 13 saw the participation of over 126 countries. The conference was attended by the State of Sikkim represented by Hon’ble Minister for Forests and Environment , Government of Sikkim, Shri. Karma Loday Bhutia. He was accompanied by Principal Secretary cum PCCF Shri ML Srivastava and other senior officials Director KNP. The hon’ble minister participated in the High- Level Segment which saw the participation of Shri. Prakash Javadekar , Union Minsiter for MoEF & CC, Ministers of the countries of Norway, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Republic of Croatia, France and others. The meeting was to discuss the framework for migratory species, post 2020 Global Biodiversity network. The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi also addressed the COP opening ceremony on the 17th February 2020. Further few stake holders and NGOs of Sikkim was also selected to participate in the conference . The Sikkim Forest Department put up an exhibition of the migratory animals in the state and the efforts taken to conserve and protect the biodiversity.
CMS is an intergovernmental treaty under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme. CMS provides the only global and UN based platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, the range states and lays the legal foundation for the internationally co-or donated conservation measures throughout the migratory range of aquatic, territorial and avian migratory species.
