Mangan, January 25: (IPR) Election Department, North Sikkim celebrated the 10th National Voters Day on 25th January 2020 with the theme “Electoral Literacy for Stronger Democracy” at District Election Conference hall, Mangan. The programme was organised by the office of the chief electoral officer, Sikkim.
It may be recalled that the Election Commission of India was constituted on 25th January 1950. Thus 25th January every year is now observed as the National Voters Day.
Additional Magistrate, North, Shri Surat Gurung graced the function as the Chief Guest along with SDM, Mangan, Shri Karma Thupden Bhutia, SDM, Dzongu, Shri Tshering Norbhu Bhutia, Deputy Director, Education, North, Shri Sajan V. Sebestain, Deputy Director, Election, North, Shri Biswa B. Raj Gurung.
ADM/N, Shri Gurung speaking on the occasion congratulated young voters who have just turned 18 and got the right to vote for the first time. He said that after entering into an adult franchise one should become more responsible in order bring positive changes in the society and country as a whole. Right to vote is one of the fundamental rights of a citizen thus the new registered voters must exert their rights in a befitting manner for the good cause, he urged.
During the celebration SDM, Dzongu, Shri Bhutia read out the national voters day message of Chief Election Commissioner of India. Simultaneously, ADM/N administered the national voters day pledge.
The National Voters Day event also witnessed the felicitation of new registered voters and distribution of Election Photo Identity Card.
Earlier, the programme started with the lighting of lamp by the chief guest followed by the welcome address delivered by the Deputy Director, Education, North while the programme ended up with the vote of thanks proposed by Shri Wangchuk Bhutia, Dealing Officer, BBBP.
