Gangtok, Jan 25: (IPR) The 10th National Voter’s Day with the theme of “Electoral Literacy for Stronger Democracy” was celebrated amid fervent patriotic devotion here at Conference Hall of Zilla Bhawan, East District, today.
The celebration was graced by Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim, Shri R. Telang. He was accompanied by District Magistrate, East, Shri Raj Yadav, Special Secretary, Rural Development Department cum Roll Observer for Special Summary Revision, Shri Anil Raj Rai, Additional Secretary, Election Department, Smt Roshni Rai, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Shri Shyam Pradhan and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Shri Hemant Rai. Also present in the programme were BLOs, EROs, AEROs, Zilla Panchayat members, students, principals and the new registered voters.
The main objective of the programme was to encourage new voters to take part in the election process of the largest democracy in the world.
During the programme, the National Voters Day pledge was administered by the Chief Electoral Officer.
The CEO in his address lauded the freedom enjoyed by citizens of India as compared to other neighboring countries. He stated that India has sustained itself as the largest democracy in the world due to constitutional rule and independent institutions such as Supreme Court, Election Commission of India etc.
He urged those present in the meeting to become responsible voters to sustain democratic values in the country. Furthermore, he added that one should not vote influenced by caste, religion and communal feelings.
On the occasion, a few new registered voters were felicitated by the Chief Guest. He also felicitated the Best Electoral Literacy Club, Best District and State Level BLOs, Best AERO, Best ERO, and best Nodal Officer.
