Namchi, 24th January (IPR): National Girl Child Day Celebration was observed at the premises of MayalLyang Children Home in Namchi, today. The occasion is a part of week long events of celebration of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme. Organised by State Resource Centre for Women under Social Justice and Welfare Department, South District had the presence of Sr. DPHNO South Smt. Bijay Laxmi Rai as the Chief Guest. Present amongst others were DPHNO (Ward) Smt Durga Pokhrel, State Project Coordinator (State Resource Centre for Women) Smt Pabitra Bhattarai, CDPO Namchi Shri Laxman Tamang along with ICDS Supervisors, Project Supervisors, Nutrition Inspector, officials and staff of concerned Department, incharge Shri Suk Tshering Lepcha and children of Mayal Lyang Children Home.
Addressing the gatherings, chief guest Smt Bijay Laxmi Rai spoke with regard to gender discrimination based on education, work place and in daily life faced by girl children. Informing, women have an equal contribution for building society she urged for awareness in health, education and nutrition for the development of girl child. She also touched upon the topics such as Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994 which act bans prenatal sex determination to stop female foeticides.
In brief address, CDPO Namchi Shri Laxman Tamang highlighted on the significance and objectives behind the celebration. He informed that the celebration is to bring awareness as well as to provide support and opportunity to girl children. In addition, he also spoke about various programmes provided under Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG) to the girl children of country wherein they can avail benefits.
As a part of celebration, the program also had counselling on Menstrual Hygiene Management presented by Aganwadi Worker to the children. The girls of Mayal Lyang also participated in dance, games and art competition wherein prizes were also awarded to them. It maybe mentioned here that a total of 34 girl children actively participated at the said program. During the program pupils from Mayal Lyang Children Home also performed on various activities.
