Krishi Mela Under Jal Shakti Abhiyan at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Sikkim

Namchi, 5th Sept (IPR): Krishi Vigyan Kendra South Sikkim organized two days Krishi Mela under Jal Shakti Abhiyan on 3rd to 4th September, 2019. Honorable Member of Parliament Lok Sabha, Shri Indra Hang Subba graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Shri Sanjit Kharel, Area MLA Namthang Rateypani-cum-Minister Transport, Buildings & Housing Department as Special Guest. The programme was attended by BDO Namthang, Officials from line departments and farmers from various blocks of South District.
At the very onset Hon’ble MP, Lok Sabha, Government of India inaugurated the Krishi Mela and visited stalls as well as KVK farm. Shri Indra Prasad Shivakoti, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK South Sikkim briefed the gathering about Jal Shakti Abhiyan. The Resource Persons – Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Principal Scientist (Agronomy), ICAR-NOFRI presented a detailed power-point presentation on the various technologies suitable for Sikkim state with respect to water management and in situ moisture conservation. Dr. B.C. Kusre Professor, CAPHET, CAU Ranipool highlighted the gathering about the Water Resources of South Sikkim, constraints and prospects. Shri Bharat Gudade, Dy. Director (Research) ICRI, RRS, Spices board, Gangtok detailed the farmers about organic package and practices of large cardamom.

At the closing remarks Chief Guest Hon’ble MP Lok Sabha Shri Indra Hang Subba appreciated the initiative taken up by KVK for awareness on Jal Shakti Abhiyan and Water Conservation strategies. Shri Subba stressed about the attraction of youths and drop outs students towards farming as enterprise. Hon’ble MP urged the farmers to take up farming on the commercial basis and meet up the production demand. Shri Subba also gave emphasis on need of up-liftment of economic status of the people of Sikkim. The programme ended with vote of thanks proposed by Ambika Bhattarai.
