Gangtok, 31 Oct (IPR): Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Ganga Prasad, today flagged off “Run for Unity” from Paljor Stadium to commemorate the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The run was organized as part of Rashtiya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) by Sports Department to mark the birth anniversary of India’s first Home Minister.
The programme was attended by Chief Secretary, Shri A.K. Shrivastava, Additional Chief Secretary to Governor, Dr. K. Jayakumar, Secretary of Sports Department, Shri S.D. Dhakal, Director of Sports Department, Shri Kamal Chettri, along with officials of State Government, ITBP and participating students.
While paying tribute to the great freedom fighter, the Governor said, “National Unity Day is being celebrated nationwide on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. We are very grateful to the creator of national modern India and the Iron Man so let us all pay homage to him and take the pledge to further strengthen the unity and integrity of the people by promoting brotherhood in the society as responsible citizens and contribute to nation building. We should unite with feeling of brotherhood and integrity towards our great nation and participate in today’s run with the determination of strengthening the path towards nation building.”
The Governor further stated that building of nation starts from the family itself and we should start by being good human beings and inspire youths for shaping the nation towards further great heights.
He highlighted that in Gujarat today, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is dedicating the Statue of Liberty built as a tribute to the freedom movement icon Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai on his 143rd birth anniversary. He said that this statue is a symbol of India’s integrity and unity and that all should learn to grow from strength to strength and always stay united. He encouraged the students to always look forward to rekindle the spirit of oneness and serve the country with their best capabilities.
A large number of school students from all four districts, youths including sports enthusiasts, ITBP jawans took part in the run which was flagged off from Paljor stadium and which will culminate at the same venue.
Earlier, Chief Secretary, Shri A.K. Shrivastava, highlighted the contribution of the Iron Man of India, Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He elaborated on how the great freedom fighter is responsible for us living in a unified India today.
“As such, it is appropriate to celebrate his birth anniversary as the National Unity Day since it is a historic and inspiring occasion for all Indians. The country’s youth should take a leaf out of Patel’s life on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the country’s great personality and bow to the great stalwart who unified India and served the nation tirelessly,” he stated.
